  • from Steven H Propp -- TOP 100 REVIEWER : A POWERFUL PLEA FOR CREATIVELY MOVING TOWARDS ABOLITION ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Judith Kelsey-Powell -- Important, maybe groundbreaking work : When I heard the author interviewed on TV I knew I had to read this book. I have long been a critic of the police because I have become convinced that racism is endemic in the force, and that over-policing (including sometimes brutal tactics) follows. I have understood that the #defund the police movement is politically untenable, but have also felt that all the federal funds for and especially the militarization of local police forces have created a monster. I had not considered abolition, and it was certainly an incredibly radical idea. But the truth is, I spent the first 18 years of my life (on a farm) with no contact with police, so I can't say they are always essential to everyday life. Even so, I couldn't quite imagine how we would manage without them in an urban environment. I needed a vision. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dante Stewart -- This is the one! : This is a brilliant and bold look at the ways in which our lives are harmed. It is the work of analysis, the work of story, the work of theory, the work of dreaming. Derecka has wrote a text that will spark conversations and change minds. Read this book and be changed. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Earl -- Ideal for those unsure of what it means or where they stand : Becoming Abolitionists: Police, Protests, and the Pursuit of Freedom by Derecka Purnell is an essential read for anyone with an interest in the police and making society better for everyone. In other words, this book needs to be read by everybody. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
